Ep 215 A Look Behind the Curtain - Improving Your Public Speaking

Working with clients of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels has given me a great deal of insight into how people think about public speaking.

After years of study, practice, and speaking across the country and learning from one of the greatest speakers of all-time in Sean Stephenson has helped me to learn some incredible tricks that can help even highly-experienced pros take their speaking to the next level.

If you are ready to take your speaking further than it has ever gone, check out today's episode!

Ep 214 RPM - Goal Setting That Works

Motivation is great, ambition is wonderful, but how do we capture the energy and direct it consciously to get a result?

I have spent years testing different goal-setting / organizational tools and recently was introduced to Tony Robbins' RPM goal-setting process.

It is one of the best overall goal-setting methodologies I have ever seen and includes a key item that I have never seen in any other goal-setting tool (that is a game-changer).

Today I break down what it is and how you can get started using it today!

Ep 213 Change It Up (Notes on Habit Change)

If you have ever tried to change a habit and failed time and time again, you know the frustration and resilience it takes to try again.

This isn't just for habits.

Think of all the areas in your life that you have tried again and again and keep getting the same result.

Sometimes, it is not more effort, but a different approach we need to get a new result.

Today, I share a recent example from my own life on how a small tweak has been giving me massively different results in a key area in my life, and how you can too.

Ep 212 Borrow My Motivation Today

Many days, when I first get up out of bed, the voices in my head are not positive.

So what can we do when our internal dialogue isn't automatically positive?

Borrow the motivation from someone else.

Borrow someone else's words until you can create your own.

For anyone who needs it today, I've got your motivation ready to go.

Just throw in your earbuds and listen in.

Its time!

Ep 211 Purpose to Your Pain

A friend once asked me, "Brian, do you think everything happens for a reason?"

I thought about it for a minute and said to her, "Honestly... I don't know. But I choose to believe it all does."

In today's episode I share a perspective on the purpose to our brain.

Developing the skill of reframing is one of the most consistent traits I have seen in high-performing people.

Today, I share one way to apply that skill day-to-day.

Enjoy!

Ep 210 Gifts Wrapped in Sandpaper

How do you respond when something terrible happens?

Career troubles, relationship falling apart, health challenges, life has a way of keeping us guessing.

What's important to realize is that we have a choice.

We have a choice how we perceive the "negative" things that happen in our lives.

In today's episode, I share one of the biggest lessons I learned from one of my mentors about the hardest lessons in life.

What he taught me, changed my life and the way I perceived life's challenges forever.

For me, martial arts have always been something I loved but it has been SEVEN YEARS since I got on the mat.

Today, we will talk about why and how to overcome the resistance that has been holding you back.

Ep 208 The Blessings in the Bad Days

Sometimes when bad things happen, things we didn't plan for, it can seem like things are falling apart.

When our perfectly organized plan doesn't come together, it may feel like we'll never be able to succeed at achieving our goals.

But what if those bad days had a purpose?

What if learning to manage the bad days was just as important as learning to celebrate the good?

How can we do that when we feel stuck?

In today's episode I will discuss some strategies to do all that and more! Tune in today to find out how.

Ep 207 They're Counting on You

What's very interesting is the dichotomy we face when we want to help people.

We can simultaneously crave success, crave growth, crave to be making an impact, and at the same time be afraid to have people counting on us.

We can go from celebrating a growing audience to resenting the audience for "expecting so much" of us.

In today's episode, I will share one of the greatest secrets I have learned about this and how to get through some of the darkest times in our lives.

Tune in today to find out more about it!

Ep 206 Waiting for Motivation

If you have ever found yourself waiting for motivation to strike before you get started, you know how I've been feeling recently.

When we find ourselves sitting on the couch saying, "I'll get started as soon as the energy shows up," then we watch an entire day blow by and have nothing to show for it, it can get pretty demoralizing.

Today, I share some things it took me years to learn from some of the best coaches out there to help you CREATE motivation instead of waiting for it.

You got this!

Ep 205 Hard Choices, Easy Life / Easy Choices, Hard Life

We've all been there where we have an idea bouncing around our heads, but can't seem to get up off the couch.

We want to get up early and get a jump on the day, but the bed is just TOO comfortable.

We want to start eating better, but the idea of eating an entire steaming hot pizza just sounds SO good.

I love the quote, "We become what we do habitually," and although it may seem like these small, isolated decisions aren't that important, when taken together they become everything.

Today, we'll talk about why its so important to have up to challenges and how to get started today.

Ep 204 Complain or Fix

I saw a quote while scrolling around Instagram that said, "If you have told more than three people, you aren't looking for a solution, you are looking to complain."

And it hit me hard.

It was what I sometimes call a "Mirror Moment," a moment when you are forced to look in the mirror.

As tough as it is to face up to our mistakes at times, it is the only way we will ever work through them.

Today, I share some realizations I had and some ways to work through getting caught in a cycle of complaining and not acting.

We decide we are finally go do it.

We are going to start the diet, get back to the gym, overcome depression, start a podcast, you name it.

Not only does it work, it starts to deliver consistent results!

Ep 199 Comfortable Complacency

I heard a quote that said, "Most people are eternally mediocre," and that really hit me.

Most people don't even get started, those that do, often give up after a couple tries.

Even fewer, continue to a level of proficiency, and the smallest portion will continue to hone their craft to the point of mastery or becoming world class.

So how do we keep ourselves from getting stuck in comfortable complacency?

Ep 198 Things Coming Together

Sometimes it feels like we are taking step after step but not making any real progress.

When we have our heads down, and we only see one step after another, it can often feel like there is nothing really changing.

But if we keep moving and keep taking steps forward, when we look up, we can often shock ourselves with how far we've come.

Ep 197 Time Well Spent

My definition of "time well spent" or a "day well spent" has drastically changed from what it used to be in my 20's.

I realized that my life was largely defined by pursuing achievement for validation of my worth in my 20's, but many times that led to constant pursuit and feelings of guilt when I wasn't working.

Now at 31 I am celebrating and engaging life more, having more fun, meeting more people, having new experiences, and life feels more full (even when I am not "crushing it" with getting things done on the To-Do list.

Why is that?

Today, I'll share some reflections on why and how you can use them to experience more joy in your day-to-day life too.

Ep 196 One Shot, One Opportunity

There are true once in a lifetime opportunities that come in our lives where we may never see them again.

But far more often, we tell ourselves that an event was once in a lifetime because we aren't willing to find / create another moment like it.

What if we could make more opportunities to do and see amazing things in our lives?

Today, we'll talk about how to do just that.

Ep 195 Will Anyone Care?

We can often doubt our ability to make an impact on people.

When we are in our darkest moments, we convince ourselves that our art, our creation, won't matter.

Why create a video, write a book, launch a video, start that business when we might find out that no one cares?

We often are missing some very crucial things when we think this way.

And we can convince ourselves that our negative voices are truth, and our positive voices are non-sense.

In today's video, I'll share some lessons I have learned to help get past it when your mind seems to be winning the battle and telling your work won't matter.

Because believe me, your work, your voice, your art, your message matters and the world needs it.

Ep. 189 The Improvement Path (How We Get Things Done and Make Them Better)

After years of process improvement work in my day job and in my coaching business, I noticed a common trend in the steps needed to get from starting a process to having it be a well-oiled machine.

I noticed there were 3-Steps that were consistent across much of the process improvement work I have done.

In today's episode I share what those 3-steps are, and how you can use them to get to the next level.

Ep 188 What's Between You and Success

Success can often seem so complex.

We think we need a complex program, years of training, systems, tools, and more to be able to make our dreams a reality.

In reality, I have found that the principles / practices that lead to success, aren't complex.

They are simple and straightforward.

Are they easy? Generally no. But with the right coaching and guidance we can make things happen now that seemed like they were years away.

To find out some of the best simple secrets for success I have learned, check out today's episode!

Ep 187 How Your Brain Trips You Up

Ever wondered why you find yourself saying you want something but never actually going for it?

Or even worse, you find that when you get close, you end up self-sabotaging and throwing it all away.

Did you know our brain isn't actually programmed to move towards growth?

In today's episode I discuss why and how to overcome the programming we are all wired with.

I hope you enjoy it!

Ep 186 Fight For It or Not

It is amazing how often movies can hold nuggets of wisdom that can change our lives.

Think about how many people have been motivated by Rocky's training montage, or insights from the great actors of our time.

Recently, I was given a variety of insights from an unexpectedly poignant movie, Changeland

This movie gave me one simple question that can simplify some of life's toughest challenges.

To find out what it is, check out today's episode!

Ep 185 Find a Way

Sometimes it feels like there aren't enough hours in the day.

But more than that, even if we have the time, so often we find that we just don't have the energy.

How can we cultivate sustainable energy to make things happen even when we are going above and beyond our normal workload?

Today, I share some ideas how to do just that.

Ep 184 Losing 8 lbs in 10 Days

If you had asked me before attending Tony Robbin's Unleash the Power Within if I could lose 8 lbs in 10 days, I would have said no. Not without doing something unhealthy and drastic like starving myself.

One of my first coaches told me the power of coaches is that they can see further ahead into your future than even you can. That they can help make a better vision real.

Having experienced the reality of losing the 8 lbs so quickly in a very healthy way, without starving myself, my body, mind, and spirit are hungry for more.

I have reconnected with my potential and want to start to engage it in all areas of my life.

Today, I share a bit about the experience and some of the biggest lessons I am taking away from it at this point.

I love you all, I hope you enjoy it,

- Brian

Ep 183 "Make Me Care"

Ted talks have been a source of inspiration for me throughout my life.

More importantly, he shares some of my favorite story-telling advice ever.

Ever found yourself sitting on the toilet, playing a phone game so long, your legs go numb?

Yeah... me neither... (*Brian's eyes dart around guiltily)

We've all been there (whether on the toilet or not) where we get lost in a silly phone game and can burn HOURS in a day.

Why does it happen and what can we do to break out of the cycle?

Many people are setting themselves up to fail from the start.

Whether it be goal-setting or trying to change a habit, many people don't even realize one of the fundamental things you must do before even beginning.

Ep 179 Tools in the Toolbox and Self Care

Sometimes, self care can feel overwhelming.

We can feel like if we don't meditate, exercise, journal, hydrate, eat healthy, get 10 hours of sleep, and snuggle with someone that we won't be able to be fully balanced.

Most people have learned tools to help them better care for their mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual state.

But how often and where should we use them?

In today's episode I talk about my struggles with tools and how I have made adjustments to better serve me.

I hope you enjoy it!

Ep 178 Drifting

Have you ever felt like you were drifting through life?

If so, how did it make you feel?

I have had different points in my life where drifting was celebrated (exploring during study abroad) and other times where I felt so guilty for it (having a lazy Sunday after a long week at work).

Can there be benefits to drifting? What can it teach us?

Today, I share some recent thoughts and insights about my recent feelings about my own drifting and what good can come from letting go of holding on to the reigns of life with white knuckles.

I hope you enjoy today's episode, I'll talk to you soon,

Ep 177 Creating Your Masterpiece

Whether it is speaking, presenting, writing a sales letter, or putting on a performance, their are commonalities between the best and the worst.

Through years of studying story-telling and speaking, working with incredible mentors, applying the lessons, and helping others do the same, I have found some things that help people deliver the most amazing stories possible.

Creating a masterpiece is something that takes facing adversity, pushing yourself, and being willing to get WAY out of your comfort zone.

But just doing those things is not enough unless you have the guidance of someone who has been there before you.

Today, I share some of the best gems I have learned about speaking, story-telling, and crafting a message to help people take action that you can apply to your masterpiece now!

If you like this episode, let me know because this is something I am thinking of turning into a series.

I hope you enjoy it, talk soon,

Ep 175 Which One's Better, Disciplined or Chill?

Some people will tell you, discipline is the way to go.

Others will tell you the best thing you can do is chill out and go with the flow.

Does it have to always be one or the other?

Today, I share some of my recent experiences with my break from the heavily disciplined lifestyle and discovers about the middle ground between the extremes.

I hope it helps you create more balance in your life.

Ep. 173 Amin Lakhani (PART 2) - The Dating Coach on Wheels talks Comedian, Imposter Syndrome, and Overcoming Life's Challenges

At a young age Amin was diagnosed with a condition called Charcot-Marie Tooth disease, a degenerative genetic condition that affects nerves in the body causing difficulty moving and decreased sensation.

He takes us through his journey of battling feeling "different" as an adolescent and what it was like growing up with CMT.

In Pakistan, where Amin's family is from, disability is seen as taboo or a bad omen, but Amin's parents never let that influence him. They pushed him to go after his dreams and pursue them with tenacity.

Through multiple surgeries and challenges associated with his condition, Amin continued to challenge himself to redefine what was possible for him to achieve.

This eventually led to Amin interning at Google, graduating from an Ivy league school, and then earning a job at Microsoft after graduation.

After all this success, he then wanted to improve his dating relationships and hired a dating coach to help him grow in that area of his life.

Later, he dove into comedy to help him battle his own depression, to bring laughter to some of life's challenges, and to use humor to help others around him.

Now, Amin is a dating coach, comedian, speaker, and writer working to help people use their challenges to help others and create their own unique magic in the world.

In this two-part interview with Amin, he and I discuss:

  • What it was like growing up with a degenerative genetic condition and some of the biggest lessons it taught him
  • How to use rock-bottom moments to create momentum and shift the course of your life
  • How to connect with people that have disabilities
  • What he did to go from struggling to get a date to having too many options to choose from in his dating life
  • The trap in the "Destination Fallacy" and how to avoid it
  • How Amin used comedy to combat his depression
  • How he has been able to face his challenges to live life without regrets

And so much more!

Ep 171 Who Am I Without That?

Identity is an interesting thing.

We create it. Day by day, decision by decision, but sometimes it feels like it is thrust upon us.

What happens when we take away or lose something that we have used to define ourselves?

Today I share my recent experiences on stepping away from things, why I am doing it, and what it has helped me realized so far.

I hope this helps you on your path.

Have a great one today,

- Brian

Ep 169 Power Through

How do you respond when you are hit with overwhelm?

When you get hit with a move, craziness at work, starting a business, staying fit, and everything else that life throws our way.

Sometimes when I get SO overwhelmed that I feel like I don't know where to begin, I end up doing nothing.

Today, I share some advice my brother gave me when I was at the point of overwhelm that helped me push through and get done what needs to get done.

I hope this helps you too!

Ep 168 Mostly Sober February

A few days into February, I decided I wanted to take the rest of February off.

I wanted to be sober for a few weeks to see what I could do and produce when I'm not working "at a deficit" every weekend.

There are times that we say we "need to unwind" and we drink, smoke, veg out, etc., but do we really end up feeling more rested and more recharged?

Today I share about some of the recent realizations I had about what purpose drinking was serving in my life and where I feel it had been holding me back.

I also share about how this applies to multiple areas of our lives.

To find out how it could apply to yours, listen in today!

Ep 167 Know Your Limits

When we think about our limits, we often think of them in terms of our workouts or our energy throughout the day.

But how often do we think about our limits when it comes to relationships and friendships?

This is just as important and sometimes more important than respecting our limits in the other areas of our lives.

Where does your responsibility end in these situations?

Today I talk about some important reminders of this in my own life and how you can make sure your are understanding and respecting limits in your life too.

Ep 163 The Wall of Fog

Have you ever seen fog so thick, that you can't see past it?

And you get that creep, mysterious feeling, wondering what's on the other side.

How many times have you known you wanted to find out what lay beyond but doubted yourself?

Have you ever, like me, said things like, "I just need to do some more research, once I know everything that could possibly be beyond the fog, THEN I will go walk through it."

Or maybe like other times where I've said, "I'll just wait for the fog to pass."

Why is it so important to walk into the fog?

How can we take the steps even when we are afraid?

Tune in today to find out!

Ep 161 The Holidays Feel Different

This year, the holidays are feeling and looking different for many of us.

I wanted to record this episode to give some quick reminders about your strength and resilience,  as well as the things worth celebrating this year, even if it was your toughest year yet.

Ep 158 Jamie Del Fierro - Forgiveness to Freedom: Overcoming Rape, Freeing Yourself from Your Past Story, and Forgiving the Unforgivable

At the age of 11 years old, Jamie was molested. Then at 14 years old, two of her brother's best friends raped her in her childhood bed.

One of the boys from that event told her, "You deserve this, you're a whore and you are trash."

After going through these traumatic events, when Jamie heard the words, "You are trash," her life shifted course. Hearing those words at such an impressionable age, at the time she believed that was her truth.

For the next 10 years, Jamie adopted the identity of what she believed was "trash." This led to using drugs and alcohol. She was pregnant at 16 and had her daughter at the age of 17. She said that in the early years, she felt more like a "care giver" to her daughter than a mother.

Eventually, continuing deeper into this story of "being trash" she go into multiple abusive relationships, stripping, escorting, and eventually into using cocaine and meth.

All of this changed one day at a dinner at a sushi restaurant when she met one of her brother's friends, a man by the name of Sean Stephenson.

After one life-changing meeting with Sean, Jamie decided to take control of her life and turn things around. She realized she was going to make these changes for herself and for her daughter. She said, "I want to look at myself in the mirror and be proud for once in my life."

Now Jamie is 13 years sober, is an incredible speaker and coach running her own business, co-owner of renowned MMA Gym (Alliance Gym) in San Diego, has a deeply-loving marriage, and is best friends with her daughter.

In today's interview Jamie will share:

  • How to forgive the unforgivable
  • Her best advice on how to overcome trauma and how to help people you love through traumatic experiences
  • What it takes to shift a story or identity that is holding us back
  • Her advice for anyone who has experienced sexual abuse on how to open up and get help
  • How one night at a sushi restaurant changed her life forever
  • Why vulnerability has led to her greatest successes
  • How to find motivation to change when you are at rock bottom
  • What it took for her to find a loving relationship that is completely open and honest
  • How she became her daughter's hero and best friend
  • How her forgiveness changed so many people's lives (and changed her wedding day)

And so much more!

Ep 157 Dr. Moses Davis - Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion at Johns Hopkins on Pursuing Dreams, Fighting Racism, and How to Support Racial Equality

Ever since Moses was a child, he has always loved difference.

He loved getting to know people from different backgrounds, learning about different cultures, traveling to new places, and trying new foods.

Growing up as a young black man in Michigan, he was able to see how difference can be both celebrated and shunned. He didn't let the negatives dampen his curiosity and passion for learning about how to help and connect others.

In college he studied Dance, Spanish, and English then after graduation spent time working in AmeriCorps (which is essentially a domestic Peace Corps).

His passion for helping people eventually led to him getting a Masters in Higher Education Administration from NYU (and he got NYU to pay him to come to them). Later he earned his PhD in Workforce Education from Penn State University.

He has worked for years at multiple prestigious universities helping to promote diversity, inclusion, connection, and equality.

He currently works as the Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Today, Moses will share:

  • How an act of racism in his childhood eventually helped him to see the "Beauty of the human being"
  • His greatest lessons learned from working with AmeriCorps (domestic Peace Corps)
  • How to get colleges to PAY YOU to come to them
  • What value he gained for working for "Satan's nephew" and how it helped him be a better manager and person
  • How we can support Diversity and Inclusion both on the college campus and outside of it
  • The importance of "unlearning" when we are exposed to new information / ideas
  • Personal experiences of when he has experienced racism and how he has used those experiences to help others
  • What white people can do to support the black community and people of color in the fight against racism

And so much more!

Ep 155 Quarantine #3 - 30 60 90

Drifting. As the weeks of quarantine passed, more and more I felt the apathy setting in and found myself feeling as if I was just... drifting.

Waking up with a feeling of, why bother getting up? Why not just lay in bed, play games on my phone, and try to distract myself through this whole thing.

Then two conversations changed everything. Since those talks, I have been waking up early, taking massive action, doing amazing workouts, and feeling the best I have yet in quarantine.

To hear the advice they shared with me, tune in to today's episode!

Ep 153 Quarantine #1 - Cocoon or Prison Cell

This quarantine has thrown us all through a loop. And we can look at it in one of two ways.

This time can be used like a cocoon, where we emerge better, stronger, faster, with a six-pack, speaking 19 languages, and having learned 92 new skills.... or..... it can be viewed as a prison cell.

Obviously, the above are extremes, but in today's episode I share some of lessons I have learned and the reminders I have needed to help me most to not just get through this quarantine, but put this time to good use.

The most important things I share today are the things that have helped me take care of my mental and emotional health through a time of a lot of isolation.

I hope these things I share help you and your loved ones to make the most of this time!

Tune in today to find out more!

Have you ever felt like life was taking you for a ride, but it was going the direction you wanted?

Like you were on a path you knew wasn't right for you?

Our guest today, Tommy Baker, literally found himself on the wrong train one day, headed towards a life he knew would not fulfill him or allow him to bring his unique gifts to the world.

He decided to get off that train and blaze his own trail to create the life of his dreams.

Since then he went on to become a personal trainer, then owned his own gyms, then ultimately sold of those businesses to reinvent himself once again.

Now his new focus is his business, "Resist Average Academy." In his work now he helps people, "... redefine what is possible and create a life they can't wait to wake up for."

In today's interview Tommy will discuss:

  • Where he was headed when he got on the wrong train and how he realized it wasn't the right path
  • How to re-calibrate and shift into action when you feel stuck
  • Why it is important to fall in love with Duality
  • Why he believes we should, "Go deeper in a world that is trying to go wider"
  • How to know when it is time to move on

Ep 124 Kirk Nurmi (PART 1): Lawyer to Jodi Arias Teaches How to Live With Joyful Urgency

Kirk's journey is a truly special one. Life has brought him several challenges most couldn't even imagine facing. Not only has he taken them on, he has is taking on life while working to teach the world how to live with, "joyful urgency."

As a young man Kirk had a fascination with law and knew that when he grew up he wanted to be a lawyer. After facing multiple rejections from law school, he had a choice. He could give up his dream and stay working at the super market, or he could take the necessary steps and try again.

Eventually, he made his dream become a reality and was a practicing defense attorney. He believes that every person is entitled to have the best possible defense.

His most notable case was when he was tasked to defend Jodi Arias, one of the most highly visible court cases possibly ever. He tells us about this time in his life: being on TV virtually 24/7, receiving hate mail, and even death threats.

After he decided to step away from law, life threw another challenge his way. This time, it was a battle with cancer.

Kirk took that challenge on as well and through his books, his speaking, and interviews like this he is working to help spread joy, peace, and love to the world.

In Part 1 of my interview with Kirk he will discuss:

  • How he overcame being rejected by law schools to ultimately achieve his goals
  • The main lessons he learned from his career in law
  • How he managed to handle the stress and pressure from defending Jodi Arias in one of the most infamous trials in recent history
  • Why it is important to confront ourselves with questions at certain points in our lives
  • Why Kirk has decided to use, "Happiness as a beacon" and how you can too
  • What it means to live with "Joyful Urgency" and why every person should adopt this mindset
  • And so much more!

Ep. 121 Morning Commute #42 What Could Go Right?

We are very accustomed to hearing someone say, "What could go wrong?"

The interesting things about the questions we pose in our lives is that, no matter what question we ask, our mind will go to work on it.

If we ask, what could go wrong, our mind will try to find answers.

But, what does obsessing about the negative actually prepare us for the future or keep us trapped in fear?

Tune in today to find out!

Ep. 116 Baking Cookies with Mom

The holidays can bring up very intense emotions, both positive and negative for people.

Some people feel euphoria knowing Christmas is just around the corner, others feel dread and sorrow.

For me, I have felt both.

In today's episode I take you through my journey in life from having Christmas be the most magical times of the year, to one of the darkest.

And more recently, how it is starting to come back to being a special time of year that I love.

In this episode I share some small things you can do in a season, relationship, or situation that has taken a turn for the worse, to help turn them around.

Anything can be made magical again with the right perspective and the willingness to put in the time and energy to reignite the spark.

I love you all, Merry Christmas.

- Brian
